After our post-zoo nap, Ann searched through her emails and guidebooks for restaurant recommendations. She found a place in a guidebook that was also mentioned by the friend of a friend; we figured with two independent recommendations it had to be worth a try. We found it in New Town with a little wandering around. We got there a bit before the rush, took a corner table and perused the menu. And there it was: haggis. On the bus on the way in Ann had said, “You know, if I were from somewhere else and I came to Philadelphia, I don’t think I’d try scrapple … it’s too bad we have these deep-seated prejudices.” So now we came to the moment of truth … and she went for it.
She went for it because it was VEGAN HAGGIS. This was a vegetarian restaurant with numerous gluten-free offerings as well. The sheep’s stomach was replaced with a phyllo dough pastry, and the filling comprised lentils, garbanzos, some potatoes, nuts and various seasonings, and it was delicious! It was also huge, about the size of a cantaloupe, so there was no way she could finish it without my help, and even then we left a bit behind. I had ordered tagliatelle, which came with mushrooms, assorted grilled vegetables (bell peppers, mostly), grilled smoked tofu, sesame seeds and probably some coconut milk, or at least something that gave it that flavor. There were also slices of some bright red pepper, complete with seeds, that contained more fire than I was seeking, but they were easily put to the side.
We haven’t yet sought out really high end restaurants, so we shouldn’t be surprised that meals so far have been ho-hum. But this meal was outstanding, and we’d even go back. We’re hopeful that Andrew will join us for athe day or two at the end of our stay, when we return to Edinburgh for three days before flying home on 25th. We’ll see if the prospect of vegan haggis appeals to him.
