We’re in Melbourne on our third day. We arrived at the airport at around noon and went directly to lunch: Toto’s Pizza House! It is the first pizzeria in Australia and the food there is amazing! (Though I prefer their pizza over the spaghetti.)
We went around the city in the afternoon. Fitzroy Garden, St Patrick’s Cathedral, and so on, but my favorite part of this day was the penguins.
We went to Phillip Island at night. All you can see are endless fields on both sides of the car. Herds of cows, sheep, ducks dotted the horizon, with occasional houses appearing out of nowhere. It was almost dark when we arrived. There were people everywhere, in the cafeteria, in the gift shop, and there was even a long leadingline at the restrooms. There’s a pathway from the center to the beach, where the rows of seats were. We hurried over and chose a spot on the far side. The darkness swept in fast. The wind howled louder, the waves higher. It was getting colder and the skies turned into an eerie pink and purple. The first group of penguins arrived after a long wait. They glided in on the ocean, landing on the beach at last. The waves tackled their small bodies, sending them tumbling back towards the waters, but they stood up and kept waddling ashore. We waited for another long time for the second group, then the third, and fourth. More and more groups of penguins arrived when we’re just on the verge of returning indoors. Our restless, impatient bodies settled on the bench, leaning forward with growing excitement.
