Yesterday, AIU (my university in Japan) ran a bus trip for it’s students to “Mori no Nigiwai” (????, “the prosperity of the forest”) and “Risshakuji” (???, known in the area as “Yamadera, ??”) in Yamagata Prefecture. We started gathering at 6.30 in the cafeteria on Saturday morning, aiming to be ready to leave at 7.00… Needless to say early mornings and students don’t mix all that well and it was about 7.20 when my coach – 3 of 4 – left the AIU campus to head on the long journey to the city of Yamagata. Not that this was a problem for me – the most of us were too sleepy to be concerned with what time we actually left. It was a 3 hour journey to get to Yamagata, including a pit-stop for people to use the facilities and get food on the way. We were actually given a breakfast on the coach, but for some people it wasn’t quite enough to fill them up until a late lunch.
I’ll be honest for most of the day I didn’t really know where we were going. I was too busy during the week to look up things before the day and too sleepy the morning we left to bother asking anyone. I had picked up that we were going to a performance around lunch-time and a temple in the afternoon, but that was just about it. So when we arrived at the Yamagata Prefecture
