As part of the background research for our Wor Women project, Alex had arranged for Tyneside Women’s Health to visit the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle to view their exhibition of paintings and drawings called “Paintings of WW1¨, and then for each of us to take part in creating a poppy that will form part of a banner to commemorate the fallen of World War 1- this will be displayed at the gallery later in the year to then be used on armistice day until 2018.
We were given a very informative talk by the curator, Sarah Richardson although there was little evidence of the contribution that women were making as the main focus was on the events at the front. Some of the images were quite thought provoking especially the original pencil notes and sketches made by a soldier of his observations of life in the trenches.
We were then taken to the craft room where we met museum staff from the Learning and Outreach teams – Alina and Sophie and were invited to create a poppy and write a message on it. We were supplied with the red felt cut fabric and various other materials and then it was down to us! I a not a “craft person” but thoroughly enjoyed the task as did everyone resulting in the photograph of our combined efforts! It is heartwarmig to think that we are part of a display of gratitude and respect to all men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
