Day 35: July 26, 2013

We tried to catch Christine for breakfast this morning but she still managed to wake up and eat before us. We were hoping to see Rocky Mountain National Park before the Red Rocks Show tonight – it is a 2 hour trek from Christine’s to Rocky Mountain, so we ate quickly and were on route by 10AM. Luckily, there is one road that loops through the entire park and goes straight to and from Georgetown.

The entrance fee was $20 – the annual pass had saved us either $144 or $164 at this point! We did a car-tour of the park, and it was absolutely stunning. My favorite part: two elks napping in a pasture. I was able to get so close to them!

They were beautiful and much larger than I expected! We saw a lone buck strolling the mountain side that was bigger than both of the nappers. Even though he was far away, he was just as captivating. After admiring the elk, we followed a small “tundra” hiking path to a vista point. When we got there, my hair was standing on end!

(I am clearly thrilled that Taylor is capturing this moment). The view was lovely, though!Perhaps my hair was reacting to the bizarre Rocky Mountain weather. It was cold and rainy at the mountains’ peaks but the valleys were hot and muggy. Who knows!A final highlight from our Rocky Mountain adventure: a mama moose and her baby.
