Hello all! I’m here with day six of our Baltic/London vacation! I have unlimited internet access now that we are on land, so I will be posting a few of our previous stops today and tomorrow…sorry for the overhaul! On the sixth day of our trip, we went to Helsinki,Bustling Market In The City Bustling Market In The CityFinland. Slightly smaller than Montana (at 130,558 square miles) and with a population of over 5,250,275 citizens, Helsinki is the capital of Finland.
Both Swedish and Finish are official languages and are home to considerably reflective, but inviting inhabitants. For this particular port, we took a narrated motorcoach tour around the city to various key spots such as the Senate Square, Sibelius Park and Monument (built in honor of the famed Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius), the Soumenlinna Fortress, Temppeliaukio Church (this spectacular site was a place of worship built inside of a massive block of granite, and finally the open weekly city center market. I especially enjoyed our free time in the city center’s farmer’s market. Lined with fresh fruits and vegetables in addition to handmade wooden tools and fine jewelry, the sound of hollers and the clanging of change could be heard throughout the shopping area. The market also included a few original works of art and clothing.
The Sibelius Monument The Sibelius Monument Primarily a fishermen town, I did enjoy the capital very much, however, I would not recommend walking around on foot and taking a tour instead as the city’s highlights are not considerably near one another. I will be posting our next stop (Stockholm, Sweden) shortly!
