Welcome – TNA ADM/318 and the WRNS Officer Corps of the First World War

Welcome to the first page and last blog entry for the study of the files in the series ADM/318, held at The National Archive, Kew, London. Files can also be viewed online for a fee payable to The National Archive. I have no links to any of the archives here, except as an independent researcher, if not scholar, using the venues and resources.

Series ADM/318 contains 556 separate files looking at around 500 Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) officers, of junior and middling ranks, from the First World War, as well as about 50 women who applied and, for whatever reason, were unsuccessful.

My entry for the 5th August gives a list of contents. The entry for the 4th August includes the main spreadsheet with edited data for all 556 of the files, and the entry itself discusses the main finding from compiling the spreadsheet, as I have not included all of the data.

There are other officers in the WRNS whose files are not in the series ADM/318. These are all of the Headquarters senior officers, and for some reason some who served in various locations. We only look at WRNS ratings where they were promoted from the ranks, as the four thousand or so ratings files at The National Archive possess very limited information.
