When lightning strikes

I’ve always had something of a fascination with lightning storms. One of my earliest memories is straining to look out of the window in the spare bedroom, trying to see the lightning and counting the time between the bolts and the thunder cracks.

As a storm set in at the weekend, I was struck (geddit?) by how little had changed.A few years ago, I was in settling into my room at the Holiday Inn, San Pedro Sula, in Honduras.

The city was calm but we could see a lightning storm raging over the mountains in the distance. As we crowded around the window, we could see the bolts cut their way from the clouds to the ground.

The other night saw me once again at the window. Staying in Southwold, Suffolk, I could see the lightning flash over the sea, behind the television, where I was watching Liam Neeson run around a plane.

After the movie was finished, I stood expectantly by the windows, waiting for the inevitable flash. Even when it was time for bed, I slept with my curtains open, so I could watch the sky light up as the electricity cracked overhead.
