As many of you know I have been in Guatemala for a week, and I arrived in America yesterday. Before anything else I want to thank those of you who were praying for my teammates and I, and to you who financially made my trip possible. Thank you for changing my life.
Every one of us came into this trip with some fear. My fear was that I would not fully take hold of every experience and I would waste the sacrifice that so many of you made for me to get there. The first day or two I was struggling with how I felt about short term trips. I’ve read so many things recently about how particularly American short term trips enforce the White Savior complex. I understand the issues with this but I saw with my own eyes how our team made an impact on the people we reached. The pastor of Brentwood, my church in Lynchburg, held devotions each morning and the first day we addressed our fears and gave them up. Through the week these fears dissolved as Guatemala and God quickly changed my life.
Driving through the streets of Guatemala City I was struck by the strangest feeling that, although nothing was familiar, I was returning home.
