Proteus is a “game” where you wander around a procedurally generated island in first person perspective. That’s all you do, walk around an island and explore, without really interacting with anything. Is that a bad thing though?
Since I like to play games, it’s a bad thing to me. I love to look at video games as art, but this isn’t the case. This is simply art disguised as a video game. I refuse to acknowledge this title as a real video game as it lacks game play, the design of which is the true art of a video game. However, as much as I’d love to write this game off here, I’ll still review it for what it is.
Since there’s no real interactions, I’ll skip controls and go straight into art and sound, which is all this game is. The art style is fantastic. It’s like nothing I’ve personally seen before. The colorful, flat shapes in the 3D environment almost have an alien like charm to them. Some things are just plain mysterious, such as the circle of vaguely lifelike objects that causes the night sky to distort with the stars rapidly growing and flashing when you stand in the center. Everything feels alive. Strange creatures quite literally spring to life as you approach, and creatures that could be butterfly or pixie, flutter about and sometimes coalesce into a large group, seemingly capable of altering time itself. As the seasons pass the scenery and tone shifts, each very distinct and completely different than the last.
