Today was a great day. After Cat, Kim and I got up, we rode for Vesuvius. We hammered out the last of this first portion of Appalachian climbing and were rewarded with a super long, fast downhill. There was nobody on the road, and with my disc brakes I felt totally safe flying down at 40mph. It was a fantastic feeling.
Upon arriving at Vesuvius, we saw Christine, who hadn’t left camp yet. Not long after she did, we were underway again headed to Lexington. The entire way was super flat and we cranked out a solid 20 miles in an hour and a half.We regrouped in Lexington at the local bike shop. We bumped into David and Aaron again (those crazy guys from yesterday) and invited them to eat lunch with us. They ended up taking a rest day here because Aaron was having wheel problems.
We planned not to go further, but had nowhere to stay. I wasn’t particularly interested in paying for a motel so we checked out Warm Showers. We found a lady named Rebecca who was willing to accommodate us (Christine, Alex, Cat, Kim and I; George and Hal stayed at a motel). We rode the last 5 miles to her house. We were totally blown away when we arrived. Rebecca and her family live on a picture-perfect farm with 25 acres of fields, a pool and a beautiful house. The family is so nice too (quite possibly the nicest people I’ve ever met). They gave us full use of the kitchen, shower and laundry. Best stay so far.
