The Memorial Gardens at Mansfield Road Recreation Ground, Eastwood, were unveiled as the first Fields In Trust Centenary Field in the East Midlands yesterday at a commemoration service to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.
The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Stan Heptinstall MBE and the Town Mayor of Eastwood, Councillor Ken Woodhead, joined Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE and the Leader of Eastwood Town Council, Councillor David Bagshaw at the event.A memorial stone was also unveiled to mark the event and in remembrance but it is planned that this will be replaced by a more permanent war memorial in the future, with the help of military personnel from Chetwynd Barracks.
Centenary Fields is open to all local authorities to protect war memorial fields, parks and green spaces created in memory of those who lost their lives during World War One.Following research, a list has also been compiled of people who served in the First World War which will be on display at the D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre. The list is limited by the information published and may not be a complete list of those served. Anyone who has more information is encouraged to contact the Broxtowe Borough Council.
Led by the UK charity Fields in Trust in partnership with The Royal British Legion, the programme ensures that there will be a space to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives during the conflict, but crucially that valuable green space is protected for future generations to enjoy as a living legacy.
