The beauty of the Island of Puerto Rico is all compacted in a small humble piece of land, which is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Mar Caribe. When you look for it on a world map, you will notice that we are just a tiny dot next to our brother Antilles (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica), and yet it’s beauty always finds a way to shine bright.Even though I grew up here, I feel I have so much to see and learn from the natural gifts of the Island. But somehow I forget to take advantage of it. I just assume it will always be there and that eventuuuuually I will get a chance to enjoy it.
Since the news of my sisters move to Japan, my family had played around with the idea of going to our National Forest “El Yunque”. We had gone once when were kids, but we wanted my sister to get the chance to see it again, since we don’t know when my sister will be able to come visit us. We wanted her to have recent memories of such a beautiful place and our time there as a family. My family had been saying over a month that we would go to El Yunque, and yet…every weekend something would happen or it would rain and we couldn’t go. But for some reason yesterday, without planning, we all decided to JUST GO. We all packed quickly and just got in the car. Off we went. We sang, talked and eventually dozed off on the way there (even though it was just a 40 to 50 min car ride). In PR, since it’s so small, we aren’t accustomed to long car rides. Hahaha.
There are no words to explain how incredibly beautiful it was when we arrived, we were all antsy to get out of the car and just enjoy nature. My brothers and I climbed everything we could find. We also did the Big Tree trail, since we wanted to see La Mina River, which was at the end of that trail.
