Peruvian Kittens and Ancient Ruins

My family was having dinner one night back in September of 2011 when my dad decided to inform us that instead of the two-week trip we had been planning to Europe the following summer, we would be taking a 17-day trip to Peru. If I remember correctly, the general reaction was a few drops of spit out water as we bewilderedly asked “What??”. My dad’s reasoning behind this, as the persnickety penny-pincher of the family, was that the Olympics were being held in London during that time frame, making the rest of the prices for travel to Europe skyrocket.

To be completely honest, when he said that, I had almost forgotten that Peru was a country (I was an ignorant 15 year-old, so sue me). I had absolutely no idea that people actually traveled to Peru. For fun. Over the coming months, my dad received countless groans and complaints, from 3 girls who were still anticipating a trip to Eastern Europe. When anyone asked what our plans were for a summer vacation, the first and most common response was “Oh, for a mission trip?”

No, as it turned out, but soon enough we were beginning our journey at the Will Rogers International Airport on July 17, having no idea what to expect and sending plenty of glares my dad’s way.Let me just tell you, when we arrived, I was entirely blown away.
